Ecological Designations

South Woodham Ferrers lies on the northern edge of the Crouch Estuary, which is highly valued for its ecological significance and is an important wintering site for migratory birds. This area has a number of designations including as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). There are also areas to the South of the town which are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC).

In contrast the northern edge of the town is not the subject of any designations, with the exception of the Bushy Hill Local Wildlife Site (LWS).
